Ask the Expert: Is the Ulike Sapphire Air3 right for you? Does it work?

BY ANGELICA ROSSINO, MEDICAL ESTHETICIAN

Our team reviewed this device for a month, one week more than the advertised duration, for testing.

We're happy to report that this Tiktok-famous IPL lived up to its name when it won Vogue's Best Laser Hair Removal Device of 2023.

Image: Hair growth in the axilla/underarms after using the Ulike Sapphire Air3 for a month. There are a few errant strands left, but absolutely phenomenal results.

The Ulike Sapphire Air3 guarantees to make your hair removal process quick and virtually pain-free, with undeniable results in just three weeks.

From where we're standing, this comes down to 4 things:

01

Incredibly Fast Flash Speed

At just 0.7 seconds per flash, the ulike laser hair removal is on par with the JOVS Venus Pro‘s for having the fastest flash speed among IPL devices.[1]

This is incredibly important to making your sessions efficient and convenient. No more staring at the indicator and waiting for the device to “reload” after every flash.

02

Large Spot Size

It has a generous 3.2 cm², above average for an IPL device. A larger flash window can cover more skin in a single flash, saving you a lot of time on your arms and legs.[2]

03

Sapphire Cooling System

This proprietary tech is the crowning glory of the Ulike Sapphire Air3. It's a form of contact cooling usually only seen in professional laser hair removal.[3]

They've incorporated this safety protocol into a portable device that soothes and protects your skin from the heat of high-energy IPL.

This makes for very comfortable sessions, especially compared to other devices that can heat your skin to painful levels after just minutes of using it.

The result is an effective yet remarkably pain-free experience, even at its highest settings.

This isn't just any ordinary feature; it's actually a significant advancement in at-home laser hair removal.

04

Frequency of Initial Sessions

The Ulike Sapphire Air3 requires treatments three times a week for the initial three weeks. This is unusual as most home devices usually max out at just once a week.

This is likely because most brands don't have the cooling aspect to mitigate the high risk of frequent IPL use.

Cooling makes it safer to treat more often, giving you more chances to cover missed hairs.

All these creates an environment that fosters patient compliance, a critical factor in at-home laser hair removal.

Most people won't stick to a routine that's painful or tedious.

If you enjoy the process, you'll stick to your schedule and have a higher chance of seeing the results you want: permanent hair reduction.[4]

That said, it's not perfect, and there are still drawbacks to note:

  • The Ulike Sapphire Air3 is still subject to the limitations of IPL devices, where it's only effective on light to medium skin tones and dark hair.[5]
  • The “Full body in 10 minutes” is a bit misleading. Yes, you can do it in 10 minutes but should you? Laser hair removal requires full area coverage. You need 30-40 minutes at least to directly flash every inch of skin. You're going to have patchy results if you rush your treatments like this.
  • The bonus razor and IPL glasses are thoughtful additions that save you hundreds of dollars in additional expenses. However, we still find the flashes too bright. You might still need to buy laser safety glasses if you find the light bothers you.
  • The Ulike Sapphire Air3 comes with a premium price tag of $300+ without a coupon or discount code. Considering its proprietary technology and over 30 international safety certifications, this price point doesn't come as a surprise.

However, it is still an initial investment that may be higher than most people expect.

All that said, the Ulike Sapphire Air3 still offers a more long-term, cost-effective solution when compared to the recurring expenses of temporary hair removal and professional laser hair removal.

These procedures can cost you thousands of dollars vs. a one-off for a device you can use for years.

Jump to: Cost/Value for Money

Ultimately, investing in the Ulike Sapphire Air3 comes down to financial considerations.

There are more affordable options but, as with all things, they usually come at the expense of efficacy, efficiency, and comfort.

If you're looking for an effective, portable, pain-free IPL device, the Ulike Sapphire Air3 is hands down the best money can buy.

Ulike Video Reviews: Before & After, Tests, Long-term & Short-term Results, Tips & Tricks

Our testers for this Ulike review has dark hair and falls under Fitzpatrick III – IV.

In addition to our own experiences, we also gathered consumer reports from individuals with a range of results with the product.

This approach allows us to present how the device performs for a wide variety of users, ensuring a comprehensive review.

Ulike Before and After:

Image: Hair growth on arms after a month using Power Mode. / Healthybeautiful.com

Baseline and Expectations:

I have long hairs on my arms, but they’re thin and wispy.

Given this, I was initially concerned about whether the Sapphire Air 3 could deliver positive results.

IPL technology is known to be most effective on thick, dark hairs that readily absorb light and heat.

However, I was pleasantly surprised as it exceeded expectations after four weeks of consistent, regular use.

Instead of using the level 2 Body Mode, I chose the level 3 Power Mode so I can use the device at max energy. I followed the recommended 3x-a-week schedule for a month.

The cooling made it a completely painless experience.

There is a bit of growth left on my underarms in comparison, but not bad at all after just a month.

Definitely slower compared to traditional hair removal methods like waxing and epilation.

The hairs are also much softer and easier to manage. I'm very happy with the results so far.

Package Contents: Unboxing the Ulike Sapphire Air 3

I love Ulike's packaging. This edition is the 6th iteration of their portable hair removal line and the presentation is always impressive.

The white box it comes in is well-crafted and sturdy.

Note that most IPL devices come in a single box that houses all its components.

The Ulike Sapphire Air3, however, provides you with a separate storage case for your primary device.

It's the first thing that catches your eyes as you open the container.

Lined in lush red, the box showcases a bougie, leather-like storage case that immediately makes you feel like you got your money's worth.

The narrow space at the back has your free booklet and pre-treatment accessories (safety glasses and a razor).

As you lift the lid off your storage case, you’ll see the device immediately. It’s sleek and compact, very similar to its predecessor, the Sapphire Air+.

Under it are the charging base and the cables, which occupy the rest of the storage space.

What's Inside the Box?

  1. Primary Components:
    • Ulike Sapphire Air3 IPL Hair Removal Handset – Lightweight, glossy, and modern. It boasts Instagram-worthy aesthetics that have earned it a following on social media platforms.
    • Charging Base & Cables – A charging base connects to the power outlet at one end and to the device at the other. The long cords come with a strap to keep things neat for storage.
  2. Accessories:
    • Storage Case – Classy and very high-end. This feels like leather on the outside and has a felt liner on the top underside. While I personally prefer to have my device easily accessible on my bathroom countertop, the storage box provided is a nice touch for those who like to keep their beauty tools neatly organized.
    • IPL Goggles – With any laser device, eye safety is a top priority. The package includes free safety goggles that save you from buying one separately.
    • Razor – This also includes a mini-razor for pre-treatment. It's a thoughtful addition, ensuring you have all the tools you need for a seamless hair removal process.
    • Product Description Booklet – Provides an overview of the device and its features.
    • User Manual Guide – Detailed instructions on how to use the device safely and effectively.

Protective glasses aren't just a nice bonus; they're an indispensable safety feature.[6]

IPL devices emit intense bursts of light that can damage your eyes if left unprotected.

Most laser hair removal devices don’t have glasses so you have to buy them separately.

Even if they do, most IPL goggles look clinical and nowhere near as stylish as this one. These look like black sunnies! It also folds in half so you can tuck it away neatly after use.

My only caveat is that I wish it were darker. The intensity of the light is brighter than expected, and I tend look away even with my glasses on.

I had to use a better-quality laser safety glasses in the end, which was disappointing.

Jump to: Safety

Ulike also includes a complimentary mini razor.

If you're new to laser hair removal, it might surprise you to learn that you'll need to do a close shave 24 hours before your session.

When your hair strands are too long, the laser energy can get absorbed by the hair above your skin instead of reaching the roots beneath. This reduces the treatment's effectiveness and prevents burned hair from coming into contact with your skin.[7]

No waxing or plucking because we need those hair follicles intact, and these methods remove the hair, including the roots.

Shaving is the way to go. It trims the hair to the right length, leaving the follicles untouched.

Having the razor and the IPL glasses all in one package streamlines your treatment and makes everything very convenient.

Product Design & Experience Using the Ulike Sapphire Air3

First Impressions

Ulike's hair removal devices have one of the sleekest designs we've ever seen.

The Ulike Sapphire Air3 is the latest edition of Ulike's flagship Sapphire Air series.

In line with their signature compact and modern design, the Ulike Sapphire Air3 has a lightweight, rectangular body with smooth, rounded edges. This allows for a comfortable grip and easy handling during treatment.

The device comes in three colors: purple, white, and our favorite, pastel pink. Very pretty and aesthetic.

Bottom View: Power socket, Cooling vent

The Ulike laser hair removal is easy and intuitive to use.

At the base, you'll find the power socket and cooling vent. The vent ensures proper ventilation to prevent overheating.

Side View: On/off button

Push and hold this button for about a second to power it on. You’ll heat the subtle hum of the internal cooling fan when the device is ready to use.

Front View: Energy levels, Cooling indicator, Flash button.

The front has three sections.

At the top are 1-3 energy level bars that light up according to your chosen intensity. If it is your first time using IPL, we recommend starting with the lowest intensity to ensure your skin can tolerate it. However, remember that higher power settings are generally more effective for treatment.

Below, a snowflake icon that signifies the cooling function.

In the center, is the large rectangular flash button you press during treatment.

Back View: Fan/Vents

The back of the Ulike Sapphire Air3 has most of the fans and vents.

IPL devices utilize a quartz lamp that generates heat during prolonged use. This is especially true for the Sapphire Air 3 due to its cooling function.[8]

Fans are integral to prevent overheating, so it's important not to block them during your treatments.

Top View: Flash Window with Sapphire Cooling, Contact Sensor

Now, let's look closer at the business end of the device, where you'll find its most critical components.

Flash Window

The flash window is the part of the device that emits intense pulsed light (IPL) during your treatment. Essentially, this targets hair follicles with light and heat to inhibit hair growth.

For general use cases, a large flash window is more efficient than a small one, although there are pros and cons to both.[9]

The Ulike Sapphire Air3 has a great flash window size at 3.2 cm².

Using it is straightforward: place the window directly on your skin and press the large square button at the front to trigger the IPL flash.

Jump to: Spot Size/Flash Window

When you turn on the device, the contact sensor and cooling system will activate automatically.

Contact Sensor

The Ulike Sapphire Air3 has a contact sensor built-in as a safety measure.

A contact sensor ensures the device only activates when its treatment window is in direct contact with your skin.

This safeguards your eyes by preventing any unintended exposure to stray light.

An LED indicator will illuminate once the device is correctly positioned, signaling that the unit is primed and ready to shoot.

The Ulike Sapphire Air3‘s wide, flat head makes it easy to use, but for areas with curves or bony contours like knees, more attention to positioning is required to ensure consistent contact.

Jump to: Safety

Sapphire Cooling

Within seconds of operation, you'll see the flash window beginning to frost. This is the Ulike Sapphire Air3‘s pioneering sapphire technology preparing your skin for contact cooling.[10]

Cooling plays a crucial role in the comfort and effectiveness of laser hair removal. It alleviates discomfort from IPL heat and enhances safety by protecting your skin from potential burns.

It feels like having a soothing globe of ice gently glide across your skin while the hot flashing of IPL takes place. It's a welcome sensation, especially as your IPL lamp naturally heats up as you go about your treatment.

Historically, cooling systems are only available for professional laser hair removal. Ulike, however, was the first to bring sapphire cooling technology to their devices.

The average IPL does not offer cooling capabilities, especially those at lower prices. From experience, the accumulated heat from some quartz lamps becomes unbearable on your skin at around 10 minutes in. This is especially true in sensitive areas with thicker hair that absorb most heat.

There's no fear of that here, with the Ulike Sapphire Air3 maintaining your skin temperature at a comfortable 50°F.

This guarantees a superior and pain-free experience throughout the process.

Jump to: Pain Levels/Cooling Mechanism

Ease of Use

Setting up the device and then running a patch test was a breeze, taking only a few minutes.

Its lightweight ergonomic design allows ease of handling, even for my non-dominant hand, thanks to a longer grip area compared to smaller devices.

While it appears wireless, this device is not battery-powered.

Fully mobile laser hair removal devices are a rarity, with the Tria 4x being a notable exception. However, the Tria 4x's battery inclusion makes it heavier and has a limited 30-minute usage time when fully charged.

There is no lightweight wireless laser hair removal device available today. We're just not there yet, technology-wise.

Thankfully, this unit has an extra-long power cord to solve any mobility and maneuvering issues.

Operations: Using the Ulike Sapphire Air 3 IPL Hair Removal Device

Video: How to Use Ulike Sapphire Air 3 IPL Hair Removal Device

Just as an overview, there are two modes for flashing:

  1. The Spot Method – Manual flashing for small areas, where you press the button to trigger one flash at a time
  2. Auto-glide Method – Automated flashing for large areas, activated by pressing the treatment button for 2 seconds

The impressive part? The Ulike Sapphire Air3 operates at a flash speed of just 0.7 seconds per flash. This makes it one of the fastest IPL devices available, on par with the JOVS Venus Pro II.

This speed factor significantly expedites treatments, making them quick and straightforward.

I can complete the entire body with this device in the time it usually takes an older model with a smaller window and slower flash speed to treat just one leg from the knee down.

It's essential to note that to use this device effectively, you must hold it perpendicular to your skin. In bumpy areas such as knees and ankles, it may take experimentation with positioning to ensure proper skin contact for the device to flash. Still, this minor adjustment is well worth the efficient results you'll achieve.

Jump to: Speed

The Ulike Sapphire Air3 not only offers two efficient flashing methods but also provides easy energy level adjustment.

With just three levels to choose from – Soft Mode, Body Mode, and Power Mode, it simplifies the process of customizing your treatment.

Each energy level is assigned to specific body parts, but a good rule of thumb is to begin with “Soft” if you're new to IPL. As you become more familiar with the IPL process, you can gradually work your way up to higher power levels.

This flexibility ensures that your IPL experience is both effective and comfortable, regardless of your familiarity with the technology.

Jump to: Power/Energy Levels

Quality, Durability, & Lifespan

Various factors must be considered when evaluating laser hair removal quality and durability.

These factors include the number of flashes, the overall build of the device, and how it withstands general wear and tear.

The longevity of IPL devices largely hinges on the quality of its quartz lamp.

Most modern devices offer an average of 300,000 to 500,000 flashes, which typically translates into approximately 2 to 3 years of recommended use.

However, the Ulike Sapphire Air3 stands out with an exceptional 1 million built-in flashes, making it a strong contender on our best-of list.

It's surpassed in flash count only by the ViQure EpiPro, which boasts an impressive 5 million diode laser flashes.

Build Material

The Ulike Sapphire Air3 is cased in durable plastic, which has its advantages and drawbacks.

Plastic devices are known for their portability and travel-friendliness due to their lightweight construction. This also makes them comfortable to handle, even during extended sessions, without causing excessive strain.

Additionally, plastic devices are often more affordable than those made from materials like metal. They also tend to be more resistant to wear and tear, which extends the device's overall lifespan.

However, it's important to mention that plastic is generally less environmentally friendly and not made from recycled or sustainable materials. When considering the environmental impact of your purchase, this is a factor to keep in mind.

Regardless of the build, properly caring for your device is still key to extending its lifespan and ensuring consistent, effective results.

Size & Portability

The Ulike Sapphire Air3 boasts a light and compact design with portability in mind.

Weighing in at just 271 grams, it's remarkably lightweight, making it easy to handle during hair removal sessions.

To put this into perspective, it's a bit over the weight of an iPhone 15 Pro Max, which comes in at 221 grams.

Measuring 7.0″ x 2.3″ x 1.3, the Ulike Sapphire Air3 also takes up minimal space. It's an excellent option for those constantly on the go. It's slim enough to slip into your suitcase or find a convenient spot in your drawer at home.

Whether you're a frequent traveler or live in a space-conscious environment, this device fits the bill.

Product Technology

Hair Removing Mechanism

To understand how the Ulike Sapphire Air3 works, it's essential to know about IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) technology.

IPL, or Intense Pulsed Light, is a light-based technology designed to target and disrupt the hair follicles, ultimately reducing hair growth.[10]

Video: How does IPL Hair Removal work? | Dr Davin Lim

The key factors affecting its efficacy include:

  1. Light Energy (measured in J/cm²) – This crucial parameter determines the intensity of the light pulses used for hair removal. The higher the energy, the more effectively it can target hair follicles, inhibiting their growth.
  2. Cooling System – Professional laser hair removal incorporates cooling mechanisms to maintain a comfortable skin temperature during treatment. The Ulike Sapphire Air3 employs a contact cooling type system for their devices, ensuring that the skin remains at an optimal temperature for a safe and painless experience. This distinguishes it from other IPL devices.
  3. Spot Size / Flash Windows – The size of the treatment area determines how efficiently you can cover a region in each flash. A larger spot size or flash window is helpful for quicker and more efficient treatments.
  4. Flash Speed – The rate at which the device emits pulses and the impact treatment speed and effectiveness. Faster and shorter pulses are typically more efficient.
  5. Wavelength – The specific wavelength of light should be suited to target melanin in the hair follicles while minimizing harm to the surrounding skin. The Ulike Sapphire Air3‘s technology is optimized for safe and effective hair removal.

Understanding these factors is essential for estimating the efficacy of an IPL device.

This section briefly explains the IPL mechanism and introduces the key factors influencing its efficacy.

Power/Energy Levels

Energy fluence, measured in J/cm², essentially represents the energy delivered by the device per square centimeter of your skin. Finding the right balance is key as it directly impacts your treatments' effectiveness.[12]

Higher Energy Fluence, Longer-Lasting Results

The higher the energy fluence level, the more effectively the hair follicle roots are destroyed. This results in long-lasting hair reduction. However, too much energy can also cause discomfort or adverse effects, so finding the right balance is crucial.

Lower Energy Levels: A Trade-off

Conversely, lower energy fluence levels may offer a more comfortable treatment experience but might not be effective enough to prevent hair regrowth. The critical balance lies in delivering sufficient energy to damage hair follicles while keeping the treatment manageable.

Customized Energy Levels with Ulike Sapphire Air 3

The Ulike Sapphire Air3 IPL Hair Removal Handset offers adjustable power levels tailored to different body areas.

Recommended Use:

  1. Soft Mode – Face, Upper lips, Bikini
  2. Body Mode – Legs, Arms
  3. Power Mode – Chest, Underarms

You can use this as a beginner's guide, but you can fine-tune your treatments as you see fit.

The Extra Mile: Harnessing Max Power

For users with a higher pain tolerance or those who've become accustomed to light energy, you can utilize the highest setting of the power mode for potentially more robust results.

In terms of max energy fluence, the device's 7.2 J/cm² level is a bit above average against most IPL devices, ensuring effective treatments.

The Ulike Edge: Sapphire Cooling

What sets the Ulike Sapphire Air3 apart is its sapphire cooling system, which paves the way for maximum power with incredible comfort. This unique feature ensures that even when you use high energy fluence, your experience remains pain-free and satisfying.

Pain Levels/Cooling Mechanism

Painless Hair Removal Experience

The strength of the Ulike Sapphire Air3 lies in its ability to make hair removal virtually painless. This is especially helpful for those with sensitive skin or low pain tolerance.

In professional laser hair removal, comfort and efficacy are very important factors in patient compliance.

If your treatments are painful and inconvenient, you're less likely to follow your schedule as prescribed. It can also discourage laser hair removal devices use at home.

This will affect the overall success of your hair removal.

With the upgraded Ulike Sapphire Air3 you don't have to sacrifice comfort for results.

Sapphire Cooling: A Groundbreaking Innovation for Clinical Comfort at Home

Ulike's patented design is a sapphire ice-cooling technology equivalent to contact cooling in professional laser hair removal.

Contact cooling is a method used in laser procedures to maintain a safe skin temperature during treatment. It acts as a protective shield against the heat generated by IPL.[13]

This cooling mechanism is particularly helpful when treating sensitive or intimate areas of the body.

The Ulike brand was the first to introduce sapphire contact cooling technology in at-home hair removal systems.

This technology maintains a comfortable epidermal temperature of 10°C (50℉) for 30 minutes of continuous use. It works in harmony with the Ulike Sapphire Air3‘s energy fluence and effectively counteracts any possible burning sensations from IPL flashes.

This seamless experience is achieved through the sapphire crystal light window's real-time cooling throughout the treatment process.

The result is an effective yet remarkably pain-free experience, even at its highest settings.

Users also often don't experience common side effects, eliminating the need for post-treatment gels or creams.

It's not just a feature; it's a leap forward in at-home laser hair removal.

Spot Size / Flash Windows

The Power of a Large Surface Area

Another notable feature of the Ulike Sapphire Air3 IPL Hair Removal device is its generously sized 3.2 cm² light window, which delivers the light treatment output.

The spot size in laser hair removal is a critical factor significantly influencing the treatment's efficacy.

A larger spot size can cover a greater area of skin, allowing for faster and more efficient treatment. This leads to better results and reduced discomfort for the patient.

A larger spot size ensures that more hair follicles are targeted during each pulse, making the process not only more effective but also more time-efficient.[14]

Advantages of a Large Flash Window:

  • Faster Treatments – A larger flash window can cover more skin in a single flash, making your hair removal sessions quicker.
  • Efficiency – It's easier to treat larger areas like the legs or back with fewer flashes, saving time and effort.

Disadvantages of a Large Flash Window:

  • Precision – While a larger window is efficient for large areas, it may be less precise for smaller, detailed areas.

Sapphire Cooling Flat Head vs. Traditional Concave Head

Another noteworthy aspect is the design of the flash window.

In the Ulike Sapphire Air3, the window is flush with the plate, bringing the light source right up to the skin.

In many other IPL units, the treatment window sits about a quarter of an inch into the unit, causing the light source to be farther above the skin.

The impact of this design difference becomes apparent when treating smaller or curved areas of the body.

Compared to ordinary hair removal devices that often have a concave shape, the Ulike Sapphire Air3‘s flush window design ensures you can get closer to every part of your body.

Speed

The Ulike Sapphire Air3 has one of the fastest flash speeds at 0.7 secs/flash, on par with the JOVS Venus Pro II. This makes your treatments quick and efficient.

There are still pros and cons to this, however, and it comes down to your laser hair removal technique.

Pros:

  • Efficiency – Speed is essential for efficient hair removal. Devices that cover larger areas reduce the total treatment time. This is especially important if you have a busy schedule.
  • Convenience – Faster sessions mean less time commitment, making laser hair removal more accessible if you have a busy lifestyle. It's a convenient solution if you struggle to find extended periods of time for treatments.
  • Reduced Discomfort – Shorter sessions can also mean less overall discomfort, as you spend less time exposing your skin to the laser. This can be especially helpful if you have lower pain tolerance.
  • Consistency and Adherence – Speed encourages consistent treatment. You're more likely to stick to the recommended schedule when it doesn't demand too much time and struggle, ensuring more effective and lasting results.
  • Reduced Down Time – This higher-end model offers shorter downtime between zaps. It minimizes waiting between treatments, which is an advantage over lower-end models that may have a defined number of flashes and longer delays between them.

Cons:

  • Precision – Ultra-fast devices may be less suitable for accuracy in smaller, rounded, or sensitive areas. You need to ensure you take your time with sessions to maintain effectiveness.
  • Missed Spots – Rushing through treatments can result in missed spots and uneven coverage. It's important to be aware of this potential issue and follow the recommended treatment schedule, particularly in the initial stages. This will correct and compensate for any missed areas.

Precision Matters: Missed Spots

Due to its auto-glide feature and fast flash speeds, there is a tendency to move across the skin too quickly, resulting in missed areas.

Missed spots can lead to regrowth in areas where the device didn't make contact.

While the auto-glide feature is convenient, be mindful not to rush across your skin too quickly. Make sure you cover every area thoroughly.

If you stay consistent with the recommended schedule, you can correct this type of uneven patches in no time.

Finding the Right Balance

With home laser hair removal devices, speed is important because it allows the process to be more time-efficient and convenient. However, it's essential to strike a balance between speed and precision.

The use of fast devices is well suited for larger areas, but you should use them carefully to maintain their effectiveness.

Additionally, adhering to the recommended treatment frequency is crucial for optimal results.

Wavelength

The wavelength of IPL determines how deeply it penetrates the skin.[15]

For effective hair removal, it should be absorbed primarily by the pigment (melanin) in the hair follicle and not by the surrounding skin.

If the laser's wavelength is too long or too short, it may not be absorbed effectively by the hair follicle, increasing the likelihood of skin damage or burns.

The correct wavelength minimizes the risk of damage to the skin.

IPL Wavelength

The Ulike Sapphire Air3‘s wavelength range of 560-1200nm falls within the spectrum of light that is effective for targeting and removing unwanted hair. In this range, the laser emits light that is primarily absorbed by the melanin (pigment) in the hair follicles.

This wavelength range allows for selective absorption of the laser energy by the hair follicles while minimizing the absorption by the surrounding skin. Selective absorption is essential because it ensures that the energy is focused on destroying the hair follicle, leading to effective hair reduction.

A wavelength range of 560~1200nm is versatile and suitable for various hair and skin types. However, it may be more effective for individuals with lighter to medium skin tones and darker hair colors. People with darker skin may need caution or consider lower energy settings to avoid skin damage.

Jump to: Compatibility

It's important to note that the effectiveness of this wavelength range is highly dependent on the contrast between the color of the hair and the color of the surrounding skin. The greater the contrast, the more effective the treatment tends to be.

Safety

The Ulike Sapphire Air3 IPL offers a comprehensive array of protection for your skin and eyes, the most vulnerable areas exposed during IPL:

  • Rigorous Safety Certifications – Boasts an impressive 30 international safety certifications, including FDA clearance.
  • Built-In Skin Sensor Indicator – Includes a built-in skin sensor indicator that only activates when the light window fully contacts your skin. This prevents accidental flashes or light leakage during treatments that can damage your eyes. It's a measure that distinguishes quality IPL devices, particularly high-end ones.
  • UV Filter – For an extra layer of safety, the Ulike Sapphire Air3 incorporates a UV filter. This filter provides added protection to your skin by blocking potentially harmful ultraviolet light during treatments.
  • Contact Cooling Technology + Suitable for Sensitive Skin-Ulike's patented Sapphire Ice-cooling Technology is a standout feature. This technology keeps your skin temperature at a comfortable 10-20°C (50-68°F) during treatments. It serves a dual purpose by preventing heat-related damage to your skin and concentrating the IPL pulse light exclusively on hair follicles. Ulike's proprietary technology ensures a pain-free and effective hair removal experience.
  • Complimentary IPL Glasses – This is a significant convenience, as these glasses are typically sold separately. They are essential for eye protection during laser treatments.
  • Bonus Razor Included – As an added benefit, the Ulike Sapphire Air3 package has a complimentary razor. This is a helpful addition to help you prepare the treatment area effectively.

My only complaint is that the laser's brightness can be quite intense, even while wearing the provided IPL safety glasses. This can be a bit bothersome, especially after doing full-body treatments.

Drawbacks

Although the Ulike Sapphire Air3 is great, it may not be perfect for everyone.

These notes reflect our personal opinions and experiences, and may not apply to all users.

  • Intense Laser Light – The laser brightness can be quite strong, even with the provided IPL safety glasses. While the glasses offer protection, I find the laser's intensity slightly uncomfortable or too bright if I don't look away.
  • Darker Safety Lenses – The previous issue might have been alleviated if the IPL glasses were darker or stronger. I had to use better laser safety glasses in the end.
  • Reduced Power Levels – The Ulike Sapphire Air3 offers three power levels, which, while simpler to use, is a change from the previous version that had five power levels. Some users might prefer the subtle increase in power for more flexibility, especially if they're new to IPL devices. However, I personally prefer having more options.
  • No LED Screen Readout – Unlike some high-end devices, the Ulike Sapphire Air3 doesn't feature an LED screen readout displaying the flash count. This is a minor inconvenience for those who prefer precise tracking of their treatments (like me).
  • Warmth Near the Flash Window – The fan near the flash window can generate warmth during extended use. To address this, holding the device slightly higher along the shaft is helpful. However, this can affect maneuvering in hard-to-reach areas during treatments.
  • Device Heating – It's important to note that, like many IPL devices, the body of the Ulike Sapphire Air3 can heat up during use, leading to occasional interruptions in the flashing. To resolve this, simply lift it away from your skin for a few seconds before resuming treatment. While this is common among IPL devices, it's a factor to consider when working in warmer environments.

About the Brand

Founded in 2013, Ulike has established itself as a prominent provider of home beauty devices, with a significant sales record exceeding 4 million units distributed across 17 countries globally.

Ulike has developed a range of portable, professional-grade laser hair removal devices designed to deliver salon-quality results in the comfort of your own home.

Research and development (R&D) plays a pivotal role, with a substantial commitment to investing at least 30% of their annual profits in advancing hair removal technology.

Notably, Ulike has introduced innovative technologies like the Sapphire Ice-Cooling patent, a triple temperature control cooling system aimed at minimizing pain and common side effects frequently associated with hair removal.

Ulike's devices are also engineered to produce results in a relatively short period of 4-6 weeks, a notable improvement compared to the conventional industry standard of 8 weeks.

This positions Ulike as a compelling choice for safe, practical, and efficient hair removal.

Cost/Value for Money

Priced at $300+ without a coupon, the Ulike Sapphire Air3 is a premium at-home laser hair removal device.

When comparing cost and value, there are two anchor points:

  1. VS. Professional Laser Removal: Visiting specialized centers for professional laser hair removal can be quite pricey, often reaching thousands of dollars. You'll need multiple sessions, making it a significant investment.

Reference: Laser Hair Removal Cost & Prices (National Statistics Report)

  1. VS. Other Home IPL Devices: There are cheaper home IPL devices available. While these options may cost less upfront, they may come with trade-offs, like higher risks and lower comfort.

The Ulike Sapphire Air3 falls between these two options. It offers more advanced features, including contact cooling for safety and fast flash speeds for convenience. This makes it a superior choice compared to cheaper home IPL devices.

It also doesn't hurt that they have over 30 international safety certifications. This can't be said about most IPL devices.

The Ulike Sapphire Air3‘s added value and safety, including IPL glasses and a mini-razor, justifies its slightly higher price.

It's important to consider your budget and how much importance you place on comfort in your hair removal routine.

While there are more affordable alternatives, we believe the Ulike Sapphire Air3 offers a safer and more convenient experience with proven technology. This makes it a great choice for most people.

Instructions/User Guide

Ulike directions for effective laser hair removal are straightforward.

Follow these steps:

  1. Preparation – Begin by preparing your skin. Shave the treatment area as closely as possible to maximize the effectiveness of the laser treatment. It's essential to avoid any burnt hair touching your skin. Don't wax or epilate, as the roots of your hair must be intact for the treatment to work.
  2. Power Up – Plug in the device and locate the power button on the side. Click it to turn on the Ulike Sapphire Air3.
  3. Select Energy Level – Choose the appropriate energy level by clicking the power button. You can choose Gentle mode, Body mode, or Power mode. There's a guide, but select the one that suits your comfort and needs.
  4. Eye Protection – Safety is paramount. Wear the provided IPL glasses to protect your eyes during the treatment.
  5. Treatment Method
    1. For small areas, use the spot method. Press the treatment button for a single flash. The indicator will light up when the tip of the flash window is in full contact with your skin, indicating it's ready to flash.
    2. For larger areas, opt for the auto glide method. Hold the treatment button for 2 seconds, and the device will automatically flash as you move it across your skin.
  6. Post-Treatment – After using the Ulike Sapphire Air3, make sure to clean the tip and store it appropriately. You can also apply moisturizers, aloe vera gels, or hydrating products to soothe your skin after the session.

Compatibility Guide/Indications

The Ulike Sapphire Air3 is a versatile choice for many users, but its effectiveness can vary depending on your specific skin tone and hair type.

Skin Tone & Hair Color

The Ulike Sapphire Air3 will work on Fitzpatrick I-IV, or light to medium skin tones, in combination with dark to medium hair colors.

IPL also works best on dark, coarse hair. The darker and coarser the hair, the better it absorbs IPL energy, leading to more effective results. It may not be as effective on very fine, light, or gray hair.

This is the standard for most IPL devices.

Dark Skin

The Ulike Sapphire Air3 will not work on skin tones darker than Fitzpatrick V-VI.

Treatment Areas

For women: Legs, arms, underarms, bikini area, and face (below cheekbones)
Treatment Areas: The Ulike Sapphire Air3 can be used on a variety of body areas, including the legs, arms, underarms, bikini area, and the face (below the cheekbones).

While it can be used on most body parts, it should never be used around the eyes (only use below the cheekbones).

Brazilian & Bikini Area

Note that most IPLs are not suitable for use in Brazil or in the inner areas of the bikini. Avoid using it on the labia minora, vagina, scrotum, or anus for safety and comfort.

For areas like the bikini region, inner thighs, and buttocks, where the skin can be more sensitive, we recommend starting with the lowest intensity level. This will prevent discomfort during treatment.

Age Limit

The recommended age for IPL use is typically 15 and above. It's important to consider that hormonal changes can influence hair growth patterns.

If you are experiencing unusual or early hair growth, we recommend getting advice from a dermatologist before starting IPL treatments.

Treatment Plan & Frequency

Your laser hair removal journey with the Ulike Sapphire Air3 involves three distinct phases:

  1. Initial Phase: Use 3x a week for 1-3 weeks. During this initial phase, which spans less than three weeks, you'll need to commit to consistent treatments. This requires three treatments per week. In this short period, you should start observing visible hair growth reduction.
  2. Second Phase: Use 2x per week for 4-6 weeks. Moving into the second phase, lasting from 4 to 6 weeks, you should continue treatments, but at a reduced frequency of two treatments per week. During this time, the hair follicles will start to shrink, and the hair roots will gradually fall out.
  3. Maintenance Phase: Use 1x-2x monthly. By weeks 7 to 10, most users should have achieved their desired results, experiencing smooth and hair-free skin. At this stage, you can scale your treatments to 1x-2x monthly maintenance sessions to sustain these results.

It is important to understand that the speed and effectiveness of your hair removal treatment may vary depending on several factors. These factors include hair resilience, IPL intensity, medication, ethnicity, hormones, and the treatment area.

Furthermore, the rate of hair growth can differ between different body areas. Sticking to a consistent treatment schedule is crucial to optimize your results, preventing hair regrowth.

Cleaning & Storage

  • Regular Cleaning – To ensure optimal performance of your Ulike Sapphire Air3, it's important to regularly clean the treatment surface. After each session, check the treatment window for dirt or damage. If you notice black marks or debris, it's likely caused by burning hair stuck to the window. Wipe these away immediately with a dry cloth. The flat tip design makes cleaning easy, as it lacks concaves where hair can become trapped. A simple wipe with a clean cloth should suffice.
  • Cleaning Agents – Avoid using liquid, abrasive, or corrosive cleaners to clean the device. Instead, use a cloth to gently clean the treatment window and cooling plate. This will help maintain device longevity and effectiveness.
  • Storage – Store your device in a cool, dry place to protect the sensor and treatment windows. Proper storage is crucial to your device's long-term performance. Remember that keeping your device clean is essential for maintaining its best performance over time.

Contraindications & Side Effects

Contraindications:

  • Pregnancy – IPL should not be used during pregnancy due to potential hormonal changes and increased skin sensitivity.
  • Photosensitive Epilepsy or Photosensitivity – Individuals with photosensitive epilepsy or a high level of photosensitivity should steer clear of IPL due to the intense light flashes.
  • Tanned Skin – IPL is less effective on tanned or darker skin tones and can increase the risk of adverse effects.
  • Open Wounds – Avoid treating areas with broken skin, scabs, or recently healed wounds, as this can lead to irritation or infection.
  • Recent Tanning – Avoid IPL if you've had recent sun exposure or used tanning products, as this can increase the risk of burns.
  • Skin Disorders – IPL can exacerbate conditions like allergic dermatitis or eczema, so it's best to consult a dermatologist.
  • Artificial Aesthetic or Prosthetic Areas – Avoid using IPL on areas with artificial aesthetic enhancements, prosthetic devices, or plastic surgery, as these areas may react differently to IPL.
  • Tattooed Areas – It's generally not recommended to use IPL on tattooed skin, as it can affect the tattoo's appearance and lead to uneven results.

Side Effects:

  • Skin Sensitivity – IPL can make your skin temporarily more sensitive to sunlight, so applying sunscreen and avoiding sun exposure is crucial.
  • Redness and Irritation – Some redness or irritation is common after IPL treatments, particularly in the initial sessions. This usually subsides within a few hours. The Ulike Sapphire Air3 ‘s contact cooling should soothe this.
  • Pain or Discomfort – Some individuals may experience mild pain or discomfort during treatment, which is usually manageable. The Ulike Sapphire Air3 ‘s contact cooling should also alleviate this.
  • Skin Burns – Using IPL incorrectly or on unsuitable skin types can lead to burns, blisters, or discoloration.
  • Patchy Hair Growth – Inconsistent treatment or missed spots can result in uneven hair growth.
  • Follow the instructions carefully and, when in doubt, consult a dermatologist or healthcare professional before using IPL.
