Ask the Expert: Is the Beam At-Home IPL Hair Removal System right for you?

BY ANGELICA ROSSINO, MEDICAL AESTHETICIAN & LASER TECHNICIAN

Before buying an at-home laser hair removal, there are several things you need to consider.

This includes your body's compatibility with the device, whether the recommended treatment schedule fits your lifestyle, your budget, and personal preferences.

Our estheticians have conducted an in-depth review to help you make an informed decision and get the best results from your IPL device.

For the Beam At-Home IPL, these are the most important points to consider:

01

Skin Tone & Hair Color

– The Beam IPL is optimized for those with Fitzpatrick skin types I-IV (light to medium skin tones) and naturally dark to light brown hair.

If your skin tone and hair color fall within these ranges, the Beam can be effective for you.

✖ – However, if your skin tone or hair color is out of range, you should opt for devices that have wider coverage.

Jump to: Compatibility Guide/Indications

02

Ease of Use & Safety Features

– The Beam At-Home IPL is lightweight, very user-friendly, and perfect for beginners. It has a digital display and just two buttons that simplify operations.

It also has advanced safety mechanisms, including a skin-sensing feature that automatically chooses the best IPL settings for you.

This is an incredible feature if you’re planning full-body treatments. It takes any second guessing off your hands and makes sure that every flash is safe for all parts of your body.

No more manual adjustments mid-treatments. And no more surprise, painful zaps over darker areas!

This skin-tone sensing component was previously proprietary tech only found in flagship devices by big brands: Braun with their “SensoAdapt and SmoothSkin with their “Smart Skin.

But the technology is much more accessible now, so you can reap the benefits without the expensive price tag.

✖ – If you’re a more advanced user and prefer a machine with more configurations, a multi-purpose laser hair removal might be more suited for you.

Jump to: Product Design

03

Wavelength + Power & Intensity

–475nm~1200nm is a great wavelength spectrum. It offers a depth of penetration that can target both shallow and deeply-seated hairs.

The intensity levels also range from 1-7, allowing for precision when adapting to different skin tones.

✖ – However, the max energy output of 5 J/cm² (14.98J) is lower than most. IPL devices usually max out at 6-7 J/cm², and diode lasers go as high as 20-22 J/cm².

Combined with the wavelength, it’s still effective, but high energy is still best especially for strong, resilient hair.

Jump to: Product Technology

04

Treatment Plan

– The recommended schedule suggests an initial 8-week period with twice-weekly use, followed by maintenance treatments every 1-2 months.

✖ – Assess whether this level of commitment aligns with your schedule or if you would rather have a device that requires less frequent sessions.

Jump to: Treatment Plan & Frequency

05

Treatment Window Size + Speed

– At 3cm², the Beam IPL has an average-sized flash window. This is a size you can work with for large and small areas. It also has a frequency of 1Hz, which means it cycles at 1 flash per second.

✖ – Like most IPL devices, the cycle will slow as you increase intensity levels. And unlike other higher-end brands, no extra attachment heads are available for different body parts if you prefer to have them.

Jump to: Speed & Pulse Duration

06

Value for Money

– The Beam At-Home IPL comes with a generous 600,000 flashes, which equates to 20 years worth of treatments.

It’s positioned as an affordable device, offering advanced features at a lower price point.

It even comes with free essentials like UV sunglasses and a shaver, saving you from buying them separately.

The Beam IPL is an excellent choice if you're looking for a cost-effective solution for long-term hair reduction.

✖ – However, some features that come with more expensive laser hair removal also aren’t present. This includes: contact cooling, an ergonomic design, skin rejuvenation, and a high energy output.

If you'd rather have a more robust machine with complete features, you might prefer a more premium device.

Ease of Use

The Beam At-Home IPL has a rectangular box shape with a slight curve for a comfortable hold.

While it's not specifically designed for ergonomic comfort, it's still easy to use.

However, the cord is on the shorter side. If you want more freedom to move around during your treatment, consider using an extension cord.

On the upside, the device is very lightweight, so using it for extended periods, even for whole-body treatments, won't tire you out.

Its simple design makes it very user-friendly, which is great if you want an easy hair removal experience.

Operations

The Beam IPL is exceptionally user-friendly compared to most IPL devices, especially in its price range.

With just two buttons and an AUTO skin-sensing function, you can “set it and forget it” in just a few clicks.

  • When AUTO MODE is enabled, the device analyzes your skin tone and applies the optimal settings for safety and effectiveness. This allows you to use IPL confidently with minimal effort and maximum efficiency.
  • The added digital display also lets you monitor the entire process and gives you all the necessary information you need at a glance.

This minimalist control system simplifies hair removal, making it accessible to everyone, including first-time IPL users.

Buttons

There are 2 buttons you can toggle:

  1. (SIDE) Power Switch & Intensity Level
    • Press and hold to start the device
    • Press to toggle energy level from 1-7 in MANUAL mode
  2. (FRONT) Flash Button
    • Press to activate single flash in MANUAL mode
    • Hold for 3 seconds to switch to AUTO mode

Digital Display

The Beam At-Home IPL has a digital display that shows:

  1. 1-7 Intensity Levels
  2. AUTO/MANUAL MODE – Starts on Manual during initial start-up, can be changed to Automatic by holding the Flash Button for 3 secs
    • AUTO (For Large Areas) – Automatically reads your skin tone and adjusts for optimal intensity, then flashes on full skin contact
    • MANUAL (For Small and Sensitive Areas) – You have full control. You can set the Intensity Level as you like, and the IPL will only activate when you press the Flash Button
  3. <<< OK >>> – Flash Ready Indicator. Lets you know when the device has full skin contact and the IPL is ready to flash.
  4. 600,000 Flash Count – Counts down to let you know how much flashes are left in the device

Power Port & Cooling Vents

The power port in an IPL device connects the device to a power source for its operation.

Cooling vents are designed to dissipate heat generated during the IPL process, preventing overheating and ensuring the device functions optimally. Make sure to avoid blocking these vents to avoid overheating.

Flash Window & Sensors

At the business end of the device, you have your main flash window and your sensors:

  1. Flash Window + UV Filter – Where the IPL light pulses are emitted. The UV filter helps protect the skin by minimizing any harmful ultraviolet radiation.
  2. Skin Tone Sensor – Scans the user's skin type and adjusts the IPL's energy levels; Ensures safe and effective treatment for different skin tones, reducing potential side effects.
  3. Contact Sensor – A safety measure that prevents it from flashing unless in direct 90-degree contact with your skin. This prevents any accidental flashes that can harm your eyes.

Size & Portability

The Beam At-Home IPL Hair Removal System is compact and portable, weighing only 255g.

It strikes a balance between size and usability, neither too small to affect its performance, nor too bulky to be cumbersome during use.

The device is easy to handle during treatments and convenient to store, even in small spaces.

Quality & Lifespan

The Beam At-Home IPL has an impressive capacity of 600,000 flashes, making it ideal for long-term use, especially for full-body treatments—no need to save or be conscious of your cartridge.

You don't have to worry about running out of flashes.

This amount equals 20 years of full-body treatments, provided you take good care of it and follow the recommended guidelines.

The digital display also helps you to keep track of your flashes, so you'll always know how many flashes you have left.

You won't be left wondering if you've used up your lamp or if there's an issue with your device.

This kind of transparency is something you won't get with the average IPL device.

Product Technology

Hair Removing Mechanism

IPL, or Intense Pulsed Light, is used in hair removal devices like the Beam At-Home IPL. Unlike traditional lasers that use a single, focused wavelength of light, IPL uses a broad spectrum of light wavelengths.

IPL emits pulses of light that target the pigment in hair follicles. This light energy turns into heat, disables the hair follicle, and stops further hair growth. The broad spectrum of light in IPL allows it to work on different skin tones and hair colors.

IPL hair removal is effective because it targets hair follicles while minimizing damage to the skin around them. Regular use of IPL devices can reduce hair growth in the long run, making it a convenient solution for people who want to manage unwanted hair at home.

Power/Energy Levels

The Beam At-Home IPL Hair Removal System has different power levels that you can adjust to different body parts, sensitivities, and skin tones.

Here are the energy levels across its seven intensity settings:

  • Level 1: 7.38J
  • Level 2: 8.65J
  • Level 3: 9.96J
  • Level 4: 11.24J
  • Level 5: 12.55J
  • Level 6: 13.72J
  • Level 7: 14.98J

This range allows you to customize your treatments.

  1. In MANUAL MODE, you can choose according to your preference.
  2. In AUTO MODE, the intensity is chosen for you based on your skin tone.

A wide range of energy levels (1-7) in IPL devices offers significant advantages compared to those with limited ranges:

  1. Precision & Adaptability to Different Skin Tones – Some devices offer only limited energy level options, such as gentle, medium, and maximum. A wider range can give more precise adjustments to accommodate variations in your skin pigmentation and sensitivity across your body.

E.g. Higher energy levels (4-7) can be used in lighter areas of the body where it's safe to use. Lower levels (1-3) are suitable for more delicate places and areas with darker skin tones. This range provides flexibility to your treatments to ensure safety and effectiveness.
  2. Gradual Progression & Your Pain Threshold – In MANUAL MODE, you can start as low or high during IPL treatments and slowly increase them as needed or tolerated. This approach is especially helpful if you are sensitive, want a more comfortable setting, or prefer a stronger intensity.
  3. Optimized Results – The ability to fine-tune energy levels ensures that treatments are optimized for your individual needs, maximizing efficacy while minimizing the risk of adverse effects.

Pain Levels

Pain or discomfort is often a common side effect of laser hair removal treatments.

It's typically caused by the heat generated by the intense pulsed light, which is absorbed by the melanin in the hair follicles.

(This is why those with darker skin tones or a low pain threshold are advised to use specific types of laser instead of high-energy IPL treatments._

Different devices have different ways of reducing pain. The most common method is by incorporating a cooling mechanism.

However, unlike some other devices, the Beam At-Home IPL does not have cooling as a feature.

Instead, it comes with a skin tone sensor, a technology that was previously only found in high-end brands.

This feature allows the device to flash at the ideal energy level for your skin tone, which not only improves the efficiency of the treatment but also reduces the likelihood of discomfort.

The energy levels of the Beam IPL are precisely calibrated to be effective for hair removal without causing undue pain.

The device offers a range of intensity levels (1-7), allowing for more precision and room to adjust to your comfort level and skin sensitivity.

In addition, you can also use a post-IPL gel to soothe the skin and reduce any potential redness or irritation.

Spot Size / Flash Windows

The Beam IPL has a flash window of 3 cm². This size strikes a good balance between treating sizable areas, like the arms and legs, and intricate regions.

However, when it comes to extremely narrow areas like the upper lip, the lack of specific accessories can make the application more challenging compared to pricier brands with specialized attachments for precise and targeted treatments.

Nevertheless, the Beam IPL offers a good balance for general use cases.

Speed & Pulse Duration

The Beam At-Home IPL has a steady and controlled application, delivering one flash per second at a frequency of 1Hz.

However, like most IPL devices, higher intensity levels can slow down the pace of the treatment.

The lamp takes a bit longer between flashes to ensure optimal energy is delivered for specific skin and hair conditions as the intensity increases.

The Beam IPL‘s pulse duration of 7-10 milliseconds per flash targets hair follicles effectively, enhancing user experience.

By keeping the pulse duration short, the IPL technology can accurately target the hair follicles without excessively heating the surrounding skin or causing any discomfort to the user.

Wavelength

Image: Lasers with longer wavelengths can reach deep-seated roots. They are ideal for dark skin tones and terminal hairs in the pubic area, beards, and armpits.
Image: Lasers with longer wavelengths can reach deep-seated roots. They are ideal for dark skin tones and terminal hairs in the pubic area, beards, and armpits.

The Beam At-Home IPL operates within a wavelength range of 475nm to 1200nm.

This range is extremely important in IPL devices as it determines the light spectrum used for hair removal.

The intense pulsed light emitted by the device is highly effective in targeting melanin in the hair follicles, making it the perfect solution for hair removal.

The provided wavelength range of the Beam IPL indicates that it can penetrate deeply into the skin, reaching hair follicles at different depths.

This is particularly valuable when treating different hair types, including those with deeper roots.

The broad wavelength range also enhances the device's adaptability, making it suitable for addressing a range of hair colors and skin tones.

This adaptability is key to ensuring optimal results for a diverse user base.

Safety

Safety Certifications

The Beam At-Home IPL Hair Removal System prioritizes safety with the following certifications:

  1. FDA Approval – The FDA has cleared and approved this device, indicating that it is both safe and effective. This is critical, especially when compared to similarly priced devices that lack regulatory clearance. It's important to exercise caution when dealing with devices that do not have FDA approval, as they may pose potential safety risks.
  2. FCC Certification – The device is also FCC-certified, indicating compliance with electromagnetic interference standards set by the Federal Communications Commission. This certification reinforces the product's adherence to regulatory guidelines and ensures its safe use without causing interference with other electronic devices.

Skin Protection

The Beam IPL‘s comprehensive safety features are comparable to more expensive devices.

  1. Skin Tone Sensor – The device incorporates a skin tone sensor that assesses the user's skin type and adjusts the intensity level of the IPL accordingly. This proactive measure ensures the treatment is safe and effective for a wide range of skin tones while minimizing the risk of adverse skin reactions. It also won't flash if the skin tone is unsuitable for IPL, providing an additional layer of safety.
  2. UV Filter – Helps protect the skin by minimizing harmful ultraviolet radiation during the process.
  3. FREE Shaver – Included in the package, saves you from buying separately.

Eye Protection

The Beam At-Home IPL also has safety mechanisms to protect your eyes:

  1. Skin Contact Sensor – This ensures that it will only flash when in direct contact with your skin at a 90-degree angle. This helps to prevent accidental flashes that could harm your eyes.
  2. FREE IPL Glasses – An essential safety measure, these come free and save you from buying one separately

FREE: Safety Glasses

Safety glasses are crucial during intense pulsed light treatments, shielding your eyes from the powerful light to prevent potential harm.

They ensure safety and protect delicate eye tissues, a must for anyone undergoing IPL procedures.

Drawbacks

As good as the Beam At-Home IPL is, no device is perfect for every person.

The notes below are based on our personal opinions about the product and do not reflect every user's experience.

  1. Shape and Ergonomics – Some users may find the Beam IPL‘s shape less ergonomically designed, potentially affecting comfort during extended use.
  2. Lack of Cooling Feature – Unlike higher-end IPL devices, The Beam does not include a cooling feature. This may result in discomfort for some users, particularly during longer treatment sessions or in warmer environments.
  3. Short Cord Length – The cord length of the device is a little short, limiting flexibility and requiring an extension cord.
  4. Limited Skin Tone Coverage – Like most IPL devices, the Beam IPL is only compatible with Fitzpatrick skin types 1-4 (light to medium skin tones) and unsuitable for darker skin tones.
  5. Lower Energy Output – The maximum energy level of The Beam IPL is a little lower compared to some other IPL devices on the market. While still effective for many users, those looking for a higher energy output may find alternatives more suitable.
  6. No Accessories for Narrow Areas – Compared to more expensive units, the device lacks specific accessories to accommodate narrow areas like the upper lips.
  7. Variable Speed with Intensity Levels – Like every IPL device, the flashing speed may slow as intensity levels increase. While this is common, it could extend treatment times for users opting for higher-intensity settings.

When buying a laser hair removal device, it's important to consider the potential downsides, advantages, and whether it aligns with your specific needs.

Instructions/User Guide

Compatibility Guide/Indications

Most at-home IPL devices have limited coverage due to how IPL works.

Here is the compatibility guide for the Beam At-Home IPL:

  1. Skin Tone Compatibility – The Beam IPL is suitable for individuals with skin tones from Fitzpatrick 1 to 4, which includes light to medium skin tones. The Fitzpatrick scale is widely used to categorize human skin types based on their reaction to sun exposure. Type 1 is considered very fair, while Type 4 has a light brown complexion.
  2. Hair Color Compatibility – The Beam IPL is optimized for targeting melanin in hair follicles of naturally dark to light brown hair.

It's important to note that the Beam At-Home IPL is most effective and safe for individuals whose skin tone and hair color fall within this specified range.

Users should follow these compatibility guidelines for optimal performance and avoid potential adverse effects.

  1. First 8 Weeks – Use 2x per week for the first 8 weeks to see permanent results. Please note that individual results may vary based on hair type, hair color, and hair coarseness. Patience is key during the initial 8-week period as permanent results gradually become apparent.
  2. Maintenance – It's recommended to undergo regular maintenance treatments every 1-2 months, as and when needed, to deal effectively with any possible regrowth. You can adjust the frequency of maintenance treatments based on your personal needs.

How to Use the Happy Curves BEAM IPL

Pre-treatment

  1. Prepare the treatment area with a close shave. Do not wax or pluck as we need to keep the roots of the hair for the IPL to work. Clean the treatment area in pat dry
  2. Before your first treatment, we recommend testing the Beam IPL on a small area of skin of the body part you plan to treat. Try an area about 2 x 3 cm in size; equivalent to the size of two flashes, side by side. Wait 24 hours to examine the test area. If the skin appears normal, begin your first treatment. If a skin reaction develops, discontinue using the device and consult your physician.
  3. Clean the flash window and skin tone sensor with a soft cloth.

FREE: Mini-Razor

Shaving before undergoing IPL treatment is crucial to achieve the best possible outcome.

If you skip shaving, the IPL device will produce light energy to target hair follicles, but some of it will be absorbed by the hair on the surface, reducing the therapy's effectiveness.

If you don't shave, you also risk burning your skin. The light energy from the IPL device can burn the hair on your skin's surface during treatment, burning you in the process.

It would be best if you shaved before your session to optimize the results of your IPL hair removal therapy.

During Treatment

  1. Wear your protective eyewear.
  2. Plug in your device to a standard wall outlet using the included power adapter. Then, connect the adapter to the device and press and hold the power button until it turns on.
  3. Adjust your device's settings before bringing it in contact with your skin.
    • MANUAL (For Smaller & Sensitive Areas) – Press the flash button to activate a single flash. You can also manually adjust the energy level by pressing the power switch to adjust the energy level in the sequence of 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-6-5-4-3-2-1, as displayed in the digital display. By default, the Beam At-Home IPL operates in manual mode but can be switched to automatic mode by pressing the flash button for 3 seconds.
    • AUTO (For Large Areas) – Automatically adjusts the intensity level according to your skin tone and flashes on full skin contact. Makes your sessions faster.
  1. To activate the flash, hold the device firmly against the skin at a 90-degree angle. Please note that the device will not flash if it's not held at the correct angle. You will know that the device is ready to flash when you see an ‘OK' displayed on the screen.
  2. Move the device to the next section of your treatment area. We recommend treating in a well-lit room for increased comfort to help reduce the perceived brightness. Repeat until you have covered the entire treatment area.

If you experience severe pain, discontinue use of the device immediately and consult with your doctor prior to using it again.
  3. After use, please turn off the device by pressing the power switch and unplug the power adapter.

Post-Treatment

  1. Use aloe vera or post-IPL cooling gel to alleviate any potential discomfort, redness, or swelling. This helps enhance the post-treatment experience, promoting skin comfort and recovery.
  2. Avoid direct sunlight and use SPF to prevent UV damage.
  3. To keep your device in good condition, wipe the screen with a clean, dry cloth. When you're not using it, store it in a cool, dry place. Be careful not to damage the flash window.
