Preventing Acne & Acne Cosmetica Through Non-Comedogenic Foundations

Finding a foundation that sets like perfection is hard enough–finding one that doesn’t break you out when you have acne-prone skin takes no less than a miracle.

Thankfully those days of second-guessing have passed and now we only need to look for products that are labeled ‘Non-comedogenic’.

Non-comedogenic means the product is specially formulated to not clog pores. This is a crucial feature for those with oily skin and/or acne-prone skin.

Using non-comedogenic products is one of the keys to preventing the horrid cycle of breaking out and covering it up with makeup.

I’m having terrible flashbacks and really, no amount of cover-up can beat prevention.

Just going through the motions of dealing with acne that gets progressively worse is a punishing nightmare that can take its toll.

Studies have proven as well that proper skin care and makeup affect the quality of life of those with acne.[1]

Prevention is always better than cure!

When dealing with acne, non-comedogenic products should apply to everything you use from moisturizers to sunscreens and primers.[2]

There is a laundry list of foundations out there, but we’ve curated only the best non comedogenic foundations based on reputation and other consumer reviews.

Remember not all skin is created equal, so make sure to check the Best For: line to see which one is most suited for your needs.

Ask the Expert: Tips & Tricks for Using Foundation Specifically for Acne-Prone Skin

by Samantha Welch, Esthetician

It’s one thing to have the perfect foundation, but it won’t be as effective if it’s not used properly.

Here are a few tips and tricks to using your non-comedogenic foundation for acne-prone skin:

  1. Clear out any build-up of (sometimes invisible) dead skin as a first step. This will prevent uneven application and that sketchy-looking surface you get when you apply foundation. You can use physical exfoliation like scrubs during cleansing or chemical exfoliation through AHA toners or AHA serums. The use of products with salicylic acid can also be a viable alternative.
  2. Moisturize well before putting on any makeup. This can make your skin nice and plump, ready for makeup. Wait for 5 minutes or so to let it absorb fully. If you apply your primer or foundation on a skin that has traces of moisturizer, your foundation will break up into patches pretty easily. If you have acne-prone skin, use a non-comedogenic moisturizer underneath. Something with a matte finish like La Roche-Posay’s Effaclar Mat Oil-Free Facial Moisturizer is a great choice for oily skin types.
  3. Use a non-comedogenic primer before your foundation to blur out the appearance of pores, as well as smoothen any texture issues. Primers have a host of benefits that can complement your foundation and help give you that flawless base, from absorbing excess oil to giving extra hydration. Just make sure always look for the non-comedogenic label to avoid pore-clogging ingredients.
  4. It’s very important for people with large pores to always keep the oils at bay because they reflect light and tend to exaggerate the skin’s uneven texture. A face that is mattified, however, can give your skin an airbrushed finish. If you have issues with excessively oily skin[3], I recommend a highly acclaimed program called Mike Walden’s Acne No More. Our skin is very dynamic and the causes of oily skin can be one or ten things at once. This guide can help you get to the root causes of your oily skin and help you get rid of it.
  5. If you have an oily skin type, use the right face wash to avoid the early production of sebum. Excess oil can dislodge your makeup as the day goes on. You can also blot throughout the day with a powder foundation.
  6. Primers not only make your skin look smoother, but they also help make your foundation stick to your skin for hours on end. It’s not a hard and fast rule, but you should always try to combine products that have the same base. If you apply a water-based foundation to a silicone primer, the silicone primer will tend to repel the foundation and prevent it from thoroughly blending into your skin. This can cause unevenness and will not make your makeup last as long as it could. You should always try to combine makeup based on the same ingredients–silicone-based primers works best with silicone foundations and water-based primers with water-based foundations.
  7. If you have blemishes, don’t pile your foundation on. Apply a primary layer and blend using a beautyblender–this will ensure an even coverage throughout. Follow this up by using a concealer and paint exactly your spot. Blend out the edges for more natural coverage. This way, your skin can breathe and only the areas that need it have the extra product. This can extend your foundation use as well.
  8. Remember, not every product will work for every person. You may need to try and observe which combination of products will work best for your skin.

Dermablend Flawless Creator Multi-Use Liquid Foundation

Dermablend Flawless Creator Multi-Use Liquid Foundation

Best for: All skin types; sheer to full coverage

Winner: Allure Best of Beauty Award

Our Review

Blendable, buildable, customizable.

This minimal-to-full coverage and lightweight foundation come with a unique dropper that has a high concentration of 33% makeup pigment. This multi-use liquid has a water-free & oil-free formulation that’s weightless and silky in texture. With only 10 ingredients, you get makeup pigment at its purest—and a little goes a long way. This coverage is crucial for those who are looking for corrective makeup with regard to acne and scarring.[3]

What elevates this from the rest, however, is that it’s a foundation that you can use alone or mix with your favorite skin care (like a moisturizer,  serum, oil, or sunscreen). 1-4 drops create a weightless suspension that provides blendable, buildable coverage. You create your own formulation for a custom foundation finish that can double as skincare. And because you only use so little, this is definitely value for your money.

Set with a loose powder, it wears for up to 16 hours. Use with the Dermablend setting powder for a smudge- and transfer-resistant finish.

Available in a wide variety of true-to-tone, fade-proof shades that are never cakey or mask-y and provide an even, natural look. Also works very well as a concealer for me.

Dermatologist-tested for safety. Allergy-tested. Sensitive skin-tested.
Non-comedogenic. Non-acnegenic.
Vegan formula: No animal-derived ingredients or by-products.
Formulated without: parabens, fragrance, phthalates, triclosan, sodium lauryl sulfates

Best for: All skin types

Formulation + Key Benefits + Makeup Artist Tips + Cons

Skin Type: All skin types
Formulation: Liquid
Sizes: 1 fl oz/30ml
Packaging: Bottle with dropper
Coverage: Full
Finish: Natural, depends on your custom blend

Key Benefits:

  • Has a concentrated 33% makeup pigment for weightless, customizable coverage
  • Blendable and buildable with a unique silky texture, start with 1 drop for sheer to 4 drops for full coverage
  • Multi-use: Can be used as-is or blended seamlessly with skincare (moisturizer, serum, oil, or sunscreen)
  • Water-free and oil-free formula
  • Dermatologist-tested for safety

Cons:

  • When starting out with mixing, you’ll need a bit of patience as it’s a trial and error with your skincare. From experience, some combinations worked like a charm (Elta MD), and some didn’t.
  • You can add luminizers or liquid highlighters if you’d like to cut down the matte finish.

Make-up Artist Tips:

  • Shake well to apply as is. For multi-use, 1-4 drops on the back of your hand or a makeup mixing plate and blend. Apply with your fingers or buff with a brush. Personally, I don’t use a sponge for this because it soaks up the product and you’ll always end up needing more drops.
  • For 16-hour wear, finish with a setting powder (or Dermablend setting powder for smudge- and transfer resistance)

Clarins Extra-Comfort Foundation SPF 15

Clarins Extra-Comfort Foundation SPF 15

Best for: All skin types especially mature, dry or dehydrated skin; medium to full buildable coverage

Our Review

This anti-aging treatment foundation has compounding benefits that work not only to polish the skin but also to nourish and protect it in the long run. This is an investment piece that helps nurture healthy skin while providing you with a flawless finish.

Organic Argan Oil and its plant-based micropatch boost hydration to increase the skin’s suppleness. Clarin’s age-defying complex smooths fine lines and wrinkles for an even canvas. Another Clarin’s exclusive—is a light optimizing complex instantly captures, diffuses, and amplifies light.

All this combined visibly reduces imperfections and leaves your complexion even-looking and youthfully radiant.

This is a cream foundation that’s medium to buildable full. It’s easy to spread, blends beautifully, and sets to a natural, soft-focused finish. Available in 8 shades, ranging from light to olive.

To top it all off, it also provides triple protection from free radicals, pollution, and UV rays.

Dermatologically tested, non-comedogenic.

Best for: All skin types especially mature, dry, or dehydrated skin

Formulation + Key Benefits + Cons

Skin Type: All skin types, mature skin, dry or dehydrated skin
Formulation: Cream
Sizes: 30 ml
Packaging: Pot/Jar, comes with a small spatula (no contamination and product waste!)
Coverage: Medium to Buildable full (Sheer if you apply it sparingly)
Finish: Soft-focus, natural, satiny

Key Benefits:

  • Helps even out skin tone for a natural-looking finish
  • Nourishes the skin and boosts hydration, leaving it supple to the touch
  • Visible reduces imperfections and smoothens wrinkles and fine lines
  • Triple skin protection from UV rays and other pollutants

Cons:

  • Not a wide range of colors, with just 8 that range from light to olive
  • The packaging can be messy to travel with, but can easily be resolved if you decant it in a travel container.
  • If you have oily skin, it might not hold up after a few hours, especially during the summer. I’d recommend going with an oil-free formula and/or mattifying foundation instead. This performs better IMO for those on the drier side.
  • It’s a luminous product that may highlight acne scarring if you have any. I’d recommend using a primer first as a heavy-duty filler, before putting this on.
  • It has a pretty strong smell, FYI for those who may be bothered by it.

Additional Benefits + Makeup Artist Tips

Additional Benefits:

  • Organic Argan oil nourishes the skin
  • Global Age-Defying Complex smooths wrinkles and fine lines
  • Plant-based micropatch boosts the skin’s hydration
  • Light Optimizing Complex instantly captures, diffuses, and amplifies light for visibly reduced imperfections
  • Triple protection from UV rays, pollution, and free radicals

Make-up Artist Tips:

  • Use your fingers or a foundation brush for a quick, and even application. (Try not to use a sponge as it soaks up too much foundation)
  • Start from the middle of the face towards the outside. From the chin, continue to the nose towards the cheekbones. Finish with the forehead. Blend from the neck to the ears.
  • To set your foundation, use your hands to press down slowly and gently. Start from the inside again, and work your way out.

Too Faced Born This Way Medium-to-Full Coverage Foundation

Too Faced Born This Way Medium-to-Full Coverage Foundation

Best for: Normal to Combination skin, medium to full coverage

Our Review

This cult-favorite oil-free foundation blends in flawlessly to give medium to full coverage. The consistency is a bit creamy and gives instant coverage with ease. The pump dispenser gives small amounts at a time and allows you to layer as desired.

It’s infused with Alpine Rose to brighten the skin and promote elasticity, as well as coconut water to help replenish the skin’s moisture levels. It also has hyaluronic acid to provide constant skin-balancing hydration for a more youthful appearance. It’s quite hard to find a medium to full coverage foundation that doesn’t dry out and cause dry patches, so this is definitely recommended for those prone to dehydrated skin.

This is a long-wearing foundation that lasts up to 12 hours. It’s photo-friendly as well, with no flashback.

Vegan. Cruelty-free.
Formulated without Gluten and Parabens.

Best for: Normal, Dry, Combination skin

Formulation + Key Benefits + Makeup Artist Tips + Cons

Skin Type: Normal, Dry, Combination skin
Formulation: Liquid
Sizes: 1 fl oz/30ml

  • Undetectable medium-to-full coverage

  • Long-lasting foundation with 12-hour coverage
  • Has 35 shades, which makes for an easy skin tone match
  • Oil-free, Gluten-free, Paraben-free.
  • Vegan & Cruelty-free.

Cons:

  • From experience, it has a tendency to settle into lines so make sure it’s blended well.
  • For those with very oily skin types, this doesn’t have any oil-control
  • Also from experience, it can oxidize on acidic skin. Try getting one that’s one or two shades lighter than your normal foundation color.

Make-up Artist Tips: Apply with a sponge, a kabuki brush, or your fingertips. Start from the center of the face and work outwards. Apply additional layers until you’ve achieved your desired coverage.

Dermablend Cover Creme Full Coverage Foundation with SPF 30, 1 Oz

Dermablend Cover Creme Full Coverage Foundation with SPF 30, 1 Oz

Best for: All skin types especially with pigmentation issues & acne scarring

Our Review

If you’re full coverage all the way, Dermablend’s crème foundation may just be your holy grail.

It’s one of the best full-coverage foundations on the market and one of the rare that provides all-day, non-comedogenic wear. This is formulated for the most sensitive skin and gives all-day hydration with broad-spectrum SPF 30 for the ultimate skin protection.

It has high-concentration, high-performance pigments that perform as well as a cream concealer. It also has a natural finish that glides on evenly, never cakey or mask-y.

When set with the Dermablend setting powder, this can stay for up to 16 hours of consistent smudge- and transfer-resistant color wear. On the downside, it can stick too well that you may need a makeup remover or cleansing oil to take it off fully.

This can also be used as a cream concealer or contour, with maximum coverage to conceal scars, hyperpigmentation, birthmarks, burns, lupus, vitiligo, and other post-operative and post-procedure issues. Though, from experience, not enough to cover dark tattoos. (You can pile it on, but it looks kind of unnatural at that point.)

Dermatologist-tested for safety. Allergy-tested. Sensitive skin-tested.
Non-comedogenic. Non-acnegenic.
Vegan formula: no animal-derived ingredients or by-products.
Formulated without: parabens, fragrance, phthalates, triclosan, sodium lauryl sulfates.

Best for: All skin types especially those with scars, hyperpigmentation, birthmarks, burns, lupus, vilitigo, and other post-operative and post-procedure issues

Formulation + Key Benefits + Makeup Artist Tips + Cons

Skin Type: All skin types especially those with pigmentation issues
Formulation: Liquid
Sizes: 28g 1oz
Packaging: Pot/Jar
Coverage: Full (very)
Finish: Natural

Key Benefits:

  • Ultra-coverage for pigmentation and uneven skin issues (scars, hyperpigmentation, birthmarks, burns, lupus, vitiligo, and other post-operative and post-procedure concerns).
  • All-day hydration with SPF 30, never cakey
  • Formulated for sensitive skin
  • Can stay up to 16 hours smudge- and transfer-resistant with Dermablend setting powder

Cons:

  • From experience, not enough to cover tattoos
  • Can be hard to wash off, make sure you have makeup remover or better yet cleansing oils

Make-up Artist Tips:

  • Make sure to warm the crème with your fingers by rubbing the product in a circular motion. You can then apply to your desired area.
  • You can then build coverage by adding additional layers until you get your desired look.
  • For 16-hour wear, apply the Dermablend setting powder, leave for 2 minutes, and buff off.
  • Can be used as a concealer and contour by applying a lighter or darker shade.

Vichy Dermafinish Liquid Foundation with SPF 30

Vichy Dermafinish Liquid Foundation with SPF 30

Best for: All skin types including Acne-prone & Sensitive skin

Our Review

This is high coverage, long-wear foundation with SPF 30 with a lightweight finish. It’s very pigmented and can provide twice the coverage of a normal foundation, but lightweight as well so it’s still buildable for when needed. This is good for normal to moderate skin issues like pigmentation, redness, or acne scarring.

The Dermafinish foundation is formulated with their Vichy Mineralizing Thermal Water, which helps hydrate and strengthens the skin’s moisture barrier. This also helps protect the skin against aggressors.

For intense spot correction, you can build up on the area and blend the surrounding skin with your fingertips. You can also use this with a concealer. (If you have difficulty blending, use one from the same line as they usually have the same formulation as tend to blend easier. This line has the Dermafinish Stick Concealer.)

Claimed long-lasting wear is 14 hours with their setting powder, 12-hour without. From experience, it lasted a solid 10 hours for me (I have oily skin) before I felt I needed to touch up.

Dermatologist Tested. Allergy & Sensitive Skin Tested.
Fragrance Free. Oil-free. Non-Comedogenic.

Best for: All skin types including Acne-prone and Sensitive skin

Formulation + Key Benefits + Makeup Artist Tips + Cons

Skin Type: All skin types
Formulation: Liquid
Sizes: 30ml 1oz
Packaging: Tube
Coverage: Full, Longwear
Finish: Lightweight

Key Benefits:

  • High coverage, very pigmented.
  • Lightweight finish can be buildable for spot correction
  • SPF 30 sunscreen protection
  • Formulated with Vichy Mineralizing Thermal Water, which helps hydrate and strengthens the skin’s moisture barrier
  • Longwear for up to 14 hours with setting powder, 12-hours without

Cons: It only comes in 4 shades: Opal, Nude, Sand, and Gold.

Make-up Artist Tips:

  • After clearing out any dry skin with toner and applying moisturizer, wait until it dries before starting with your foundation.
  • You can use either a sponge or brush for the face and fingertips near the eye area. The warmth from your fingers will help the product meld into your skin. Moisten the sponge or brush with a water spray for easier application.
  • If you need spot coverage, you’ll still have to use this with a concealer.
  • Don’t forget to blend near the top of the forehead, ears, and neck to avoid uneven lines.
  • Use a setting spray or powder to add longevity.

Laura Mercier Candleglow Soft Luminous Foundation

Laura Mercier Candleglow Soft Luminous Foundation

Best for: All skin types; sheer to medium buildable coverage

Our Review

This iconic ultra-lightweight foundation features unique light-reflecting pigments that give it a soft, luminous glow. Its blend of micro-fine Radiant-Pearl Mica helps to even out skin tone and soften the appearance of wrinkles, pores, and fine lines.

It has a sheer to medium buildable coverage with a stay-true color that flatters the skin’s natural complexion without masking it. The effect is so natural that it feels like it blends and sinks into the skin instead of just sitting on top like most cakey foundations.

It also provides an extra boost of long-lasting hydration and a dewy glow.

It indicates that it’s suited for all skin types. However, from experience, I wouldn’t recommend this for those with very oily skin types or have noticeable acne scarring (Opt for matte formulations instead as the light can emphasize textured scarring.) I would recommend this for those with dry to normal skin looking to improve a dull complexion.

Fragrance-free. Talc-free.
Dermatologist-tested. Non-comedogenic.

Best for: All skin types (from experience, would not recommend for very oily skin)

Formulation + Makeup Artist Tips + Cons

Skin Type: All skin types (From experience, would not recommend for very oily skin)
Formulation: Liquid
Sizes: 1 fl oz/30ml
Packaging: Bottle
Coverage: Sheer to medium buildable
Finish: Soft, luminous

Cons:

  • Doesn’t have a wide range of different skin tones
  • I have acidic skin, and this oxidizes me. Whenever this happens, I make sure to buy a foundation that is one to two shades lighter than normal for a perfect match.
  • From experience, not that great at controlling oil.

Make-up Artist Tips:

  • If you have any stand-out blemishes, just apply a concealer on top and blend out the sides.
  • Make sure to shake well, place a small amount on the back of your hand and apply to your face with a sponge or your fingertips.
